Like any
stone from a specific locality, the slate of Maine Slate and Stone has a color
all of its own. We call it “Crocker Grey” for the quarry it was mined from
years ago.
Crocker Grey is not black like many
other slates, nor is it completely light in color like a true grey. Crocker Grey exhibits a silvery sheen from
its mica content that blends richly with its darker undertones. A percentage of
the pieces in any given batch have beautiful layers or veins of pure white
quartzite marbling producing a wondrous natural effect when exposed to rain or
sun.
Natural slate
contains a small percentage of iron, and Crocker Grey is no different. Often,
cleft edges of slate will “bleed” a rust like color that is a result of the
iron content and the algae that live upon it. It is truly a beautiful beholding
for a natural stone in any setting. A
wall that exposes the cleft edges of our slate will immediately have an aged
and antique look as it is built.
Pictures
alone do not do the color of our slate much justice. For a color sample please
contact our sales office, and we will happily ship you a portion of Crocker
Grey slate.
